History
The Domain was created in 1925 by Pierre GELIN. It has been run by Stéphen GELIN since 1969, then by his son Pierre-Emmanuel who took over. This last one takes a particular care of the cultural method, by certifying the plots in organic agriculture. The wine is also certified since 2016.
“Clos de Meixvelle” refers to the location of the parcel within the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation: “meix” means environments in old French. Moreover, the parcel is a “clos”, because it is surrounded by high walls, which shelter it and participate in creating the microclimate necessary for the elaboration of this wine.
Terroir & Winemaking
The Gevrey-Chambertin appellation is a “Village” appellation of the Côte-de-Nuits. The cuvée “Clos de Meixvelle” is elaborated on a parcel of 1,80 hectares, cultivated in Organic Agriculture. The terroir of this parcel is composed of stony soils, not very deep, from Pinot Noir vines of more than 50 years of average age. The grapes are obviously harvested by hand, and the wine is then left in vat for about 20 days, with 2 pigeage per day. Finally, the wine is aged in oak barrels for almost 2 years.
Tasting
The brilliance of youth colors this cuvée with a bright ruby that takes on a dark carmine, black cherry color with age. Strawberry, blackberry, violet and rose are among its spontaneous aromas. On the other hand, maturity gives it a liquorice, leather and fur bouquet, with gamey and undergrowth accents. Full-bodied, powerful, rich & robust: this wine asserts itself on a firm structure, with tannins that play on velvet, with a very fine grain, without any roughness. Pleasant when young, it is however and above all a wine to keep. To be kept between 10 & 15 years depending on the vintage.
