What is now Château Monbrison was historically a farm of the neighboring property of Château d’Arsac, belonging to the powerful De Ségur family. In 1749, Monbrison was sold as an independent property to Monsieur de Copmartin, Councilor of the King in Bordeaux, and remained in the hands of this family until 1818. From that moment, Monsieur de Monbrison bought and expanded the estate. Since then, the property had numerous owners and it belongs since 1921 to the Von Der Heyden family. Over the years, this vineyard had to undergo ups and downs, the most important was its pulling-up in 1939, on the eve of the last war, to return to its present form in 1963. Today it is Laurent Von Der Heyden, who lived and ran his own business in the United States for a dozen years, manages the family property of this beautiful estate.
From 1974 to 1983, six hectares of the Château Monbrison terroir were leased to Alexis Lichine of the Prieuré Lichine in Margaux and this share of harvest returned to the production of the Prieuré (Monbrison having always maintained the control in all his vineyard). This agreement terminated, the property, thanks to new rents from neighbors, was increased to 13.20 ha, to which are added the 7.40 ha of Cordet. The variety is divided as follows: 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot. The gravelly soil is, so to speak, in one piece, on the plateau known as Poujeaux, adjoining Le Tertre and Angludet on one side and Giscours on the other. It is bordered by the local road linking Arsac to Macau. Château Monbrison practice the “green harvest”. The vinification is traditional: pumping up twice a day with strong ventilation, temperature control. Vatting time approximately 3 weeks. Aging is done in barrels 50% new barrels, 50% barrels of one year, during 18 months.
At tasting, Château Monbrison reveals itself as a generous and expressive wine, with a very surprising aromatic finesse. A reference among the “unclassified” Margaux.
