History
Peyraguey whose name historically means hill or promontory, is an old barony acquired in the eighteenth century by the president of the parliament of Bordeaux who was guillotined during the Revolution. It was at this point that Mr. Lafaurie became acquirer of the estate under the name of Pichard-Lafaurie. Between 1864 and 1879 this property passed from the hands of Mr. Saint Rieul Dupouy to those of Count Duchatel.
It was during the division of the latter’s heritage in 1879 that the estate was split in two: a part was named Lafaurie-Peyraguey in honor of Mr. Lafaurie who had given it fame and prestige and the highest land at the top of the hill of Bommes will be named Clos Haut-Peyraguey. The property will eventually be acquired by the Pauly family in 1914 and has since been passed from generation to generation. It was in 2012 that Bernard Magrez bought the Clos Haut-Peyraguey to perpetuate the excellence of this Sauternes but also to give it an international reputation.
Terroir & Vinification
The vineyards of Clos Haut-Peyraguey and its terroir today consist of 95% Sémillon for 5% Sauvignon Blanc on about 16 hectares. The beginning date of the harvest is variable according to the vintages. On the estate, the harvest is done by “sorting”, that is to say in several times. At each passage, only sufficiently “roasted” grains are taken, hence the term “sorting”. Let’s say that the more difficult the year, the more sorting. In favorable years 1 to 3 sortings are made.
The constant presence of Martine Langlais-Pauly in the vines allows an observation of ground and an increased precision in the instructions given to the pickers (chosen with a lot of care after an audition). This vigilance and the resulting measures are really succesful especially in difficult vintages where the quality must be extremely precise so that Clos Haut-Peyraguey deserves its name followed by the mention “cru classé en 1855“.
Tastinig
At the tasting, Clos Haut-Peyraguey offers a wine of an impressive smoothness, with notes of apricot and orange ..Its golden dress will delight Sauternes lovers.
