Château Calon Ségur is located on the Saint-Estèphe’s town. At the Gallo-Roman times, this village was called “Calones” (it was the name of the boats, which were used to transport timber from one bank to another of the Gironde). The château then took the name of Saint-Estèphe de Calon. Marquis Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur acquired the field in the eighteenth century and the Château became “Château Calon-Ségur”. The marquis was also owner of Château Lafite and Château Latour. The 60 hectares of this area produce a powerful and fragrant wine, which was ranked “third cru classé” in 1855. Thanks to the selflessness of its current owner, Denise Capbern-Gasqueton, the wines of château Calon Segur often compete with the best ones. There is also a second wine, the Marquis de Calon.
Marquis de Calon has a beautiful deep red colour; aromas of ripe red fruit appeal to seduce the nose (typical from Saint-Estèphe area). It is very elegant, with good aromas of vanilla, which reflects a careful breeding in new barrels. In the mouth, the wine is very expressive, lively and long. Finesse and elegance expected through the first impression of the nose are confirmed within the taste. This wine is well balanced and rich with a good structure. Available May the 1st 2011.
